Check the current application first
Before starting an NSDL photo resize or choosing a UTIITSL preset, identify the form you are actually submitting. As of 1 April 2026, Protean says Indian applicants should use the revised Form 93 or Form 94 for a new PAN application; UTIITSL also lists those new forms and says older Form 49A applications are no longer accepted. The current upload flow, not an old tutorial or a preset label, decides which dimensions and file limit to follow.
Older guides often quote a Protean/NSDL photo of 2.5 × 3.5 cm at 200 DPI and up to 50 KB, or a UTIITSL photo of 213 × 213 pixels at 300 DPI and under 30 KB. Treat these as legacy reference presets unless the current form displays the same requirements.
PAN card photo size in KB, pixels and DPI
Width and height in pixels describe how many picture elements make up the image. DPI describes how those pixels map to a printed dimension; changing DPI metadata alone does not add detail or change the pixel count. Kilobytes (KB) measure the saved file’s size, which is affected by pixel dimensions, image detail, color, and JPEG compression. A photo can have the correct pixel size and still exceed the allowed KB.
A practical resizing workflow
- Open the official application and note its current photo format, aspect ratio, pixel/DPI requirements, and maximum file size.
- Choose a recent, sharp, well-lit color photo with a plain background. Avoid a screenshot or a photo of a printed photo if a clean original is available.
- Use a PAN card photo resizer to select the photo, set the requested aspect ratio, and crop around the head and shoulders as instructed.
- Set the exact pixel dimensions if the application specifies them. Export as the required format, usually JPEG only when the form asks for JPEG.
- Check the downloaded file’s dimensions, file type and actual size on your device. Reopen it to ensure the face remains sharp and the background looks clean.
Avoid common PAN photo mistakes
Do not assume that “passport size,” a particular DPI, or a 50 KB limit applies to every route. Do not stretch a small image to create artificial detail, and do not keep lowering JPEG quality until the face looks blocky. If the correct crop cannot meet the limit without becoming unclear, start with a better source image.
